Smelly feet: what to do? Causes, tips and solutions

Smelly feet: what to do? Causes, tips and solutions

Why do I suffer from stinky feet (and how do I get rid of them)?

You take off your shoes at the end of a long day and there it is again: that pungent, uncomfortable smell of sweat. Stinky feet (called bromhidrosis in medical terms) is a common problem, but where exactly does it come from?

What are stinky feet?

Many people think fresh sweat smells, but that is a myth. In fact, fresh sweat is virtually odourless! The typical stink of stinky feet only occurs when bacteria and fungi (which naturally live on your skin) come into contact with sweat and dead skin cells. Once they break this down, a pungent odour is released. And because your feet are trapped in warm, damp shoes all day, you unconsciously create the ultimate lazy land for these bacteria.

The Solution: PediFris® for odour-free feet and shoes

Want to get rid of stinky feet for good? Then just washing your feet or spraying a deospray is not enough. You need to tackle the problem at the absolute source with a smart two-step approach: kill the stubborn bacteria in your shoes AND stop the excessive sweat production of your feet. We tell you exactly how to do this.

PediFris® Classic Shoe Powder: Banish the Smell from your Shoes

The most common mistake made when fighting stinky feet? Washing the feet, but forgetting the shoes! As long as the bacteria and fungus still live in the lining of your favourite trainers or work shoes, the stench returns at lightning speed as soon as you put them back on.

PediFris® Classic shoe powder puts an end to these bacteria once and for all. This powerful spreading powder does not cover up anything with a layer of perfume, but actively kills off fungus and odour-causing agents. Simply sprinkle half a teaspoon of powder into your shoes before putting them on. The powder will do its job for the rest of the day, so you can take off your shoes worry-free.

PediSpray® Foot Spray: Dry Feet, Less Sweat

To banish the smell for good, we need to deprive the bacteria of their breeding ground. That means: ensuring drier feet! Whereas a standard deodorant merely sprays a (temporary) layer of perfume over the smell, PediSpray® is a powerful anti-perspirant.

The high-quality aluminium salts in the spray safely calm overactive sweat glands. This drastically reduces sweat production and keeps your feet wonderfully dry. Without sweat, bacteria have nothing to break down, and without breakdown... there is no smell!

  • Apply: Spray PediSpray® at night before going to bed on clean, dried feet (don't forget the areas between your toes). Use 4 to 6 pumps and allow skin to air dry completely.

  • Operation: After one application, your feet are guaranteed to stay dry and fresh for up to 5 days. Use it daily for the first week and then easily build up to once or twice a week.

In brief (Knowledge base)

Here are the key points about stinky feet at a glance. Click open a question for explanation.

What exactly are stinky feet (bromhidrosis)?
  • The cause: Smelly feet are caused by bacteria and fungi on your skin coming into contact with sweat and dead skin cells.
  • The process: When these microorganisms break down the sweat, volatile substances are released, causing a strong, pungent odour.
  • The aggravating factors: Heat, moisture and closed (synthetic) shoes act like a greenhouse, accelerating and exacerbating this process.
Is an ordinary foot deodorant enough for stinky feet?
  • Just masking the smell: No, a standard foot deodorant simply isn’t enough. A deodorant merely covers the odour with a layer of perfume, but doesn’t stop sweating.
  • The solution: To really solve the problem of smelly feet, you need an antiperspirant (such as PediSpray®). This stops the actual production of sweat. Combine this with antibacterial shoe powder for the ultimate result.
Why do my feet/shoes smell like ammonia or "cat piss"?
  • Specific bacteria: This is caused by a specific strain of bacteria that thrives in damp, poorly ventilated shoes.
  • Chemical odour: When these bacteria break down sweat, they release substances that smell strongly of ammonia.
  • Solution: PediFris® Classic shoe powder specifically kills these stubborn bacteria, causing the cat urine smell to disappear immediately.
Which socks and shoes help with stinky feet?
  • Breathable materials: Always choose socks made from breathable materials, such as cotton, bamboo or (merino) wool.
  • Avoid synthetics: Synthetic materials (such as polyester) trap the foot and retain sweat.
  • Rotate your shoes: Try not to wear the same shoes two days in a row. Allow your shoes at least 24 hours to air dry completely.
Are stinky feet contagious?
  • Odour is not contagious: You cannot pass the unpleasant smell itself on to someone else.
  • Fungi are: The underlying fungi (which contribute to the odour, such as athlete’s foot) can be contagious via damp floors (such as in swimming pools or showers) or by wearing each other’s shoes.
When should I see a GP with my stinky feet?
  • Everyday vs. medical: In 95% of cases, smelly feet can be easily treated at home using PediSpray® and PediFris®.
  • When to see a doctor: Consult your GP if, in addition to the odour, you are also experiencing pain, (open) wounds, signs of a serious infection, or if you have diabetes.

Frequently asked questions about stinky feet

Comprehensive answers to the most common questions about causes, product choice, shoes and when you need medical advice.

What is bromhidrosis (stinky feet) and how does the smell occur?

Smelly feet — often referred to medically as bromhidrosis — occur when bacteria and fungi on your skin come into contact with sweat and skin flakes. Fresh sweat itself has hardly any smell; the pungent odour is caused by microorganisms breaking down sweat, thereby releasing volatile compounds.

Heat, moisture and closed shoes (often synthetic) intensify this effect: your feet and shoes become a greenhouse in which odour builds up more quickly.

Why is just a foot deodorant not enough?

A standard foot deodorant mainly masks the odour: the fragrance covers up the smell, but sweat production and bacteria in the shoe remain.

For a more sustainable approach, you need an antiperspirant applied to the skin — such as PediSpray® — which helps to calm overactive sweat glands. Combine this with PediFris® Classic in your footwear to tackle odour-causing bacteria and fungi at the source.

Why does it sometimes smell like ammonia or "cat piss"?

Certain strains of bacteria in damp, poorly ventilated shoes break down sweat into substances that smell of ammonia — often described as a “cat’s urine smell”. This odour permeates the lining and fibres.

PediFris® Classic targets bacteria in footwear and helps reduce this stubborn odour, particularly when combined with drier feet (less sweat = less food for bacteria).

Which socks and shoes are smartest for stinky feet?

Choose socks made from breathable materials: cotton, bamboo or (merino) wool. Avoid synthetic materials that trap sweat, such as polyester, as the main fabric.

Rotate your shoes: don’t wear the same pair two days in a row and allow shoes to dry for at least 24 hours. This keeps the inside less damp and less conducive to odour-causing bacteria.

Are stinky feet contagious?

The odour itself isn’t something you ‘pass on’ like a virus. However , fungi — such as those causing athlete’s foot — can be transmitted via wet floors, changing rooms or shared shoes.

Good hygiene, dry feet and clean shoes reduce that risk.

When should I see a GP?

For most people, smelly feet can be effectively treated at home using the right products and habits. See your GP if you have pain, open sores, signs of a serious infection, or if you have diabetes and are concerned about your feet.

If symptoms are persistent or severe, your doctor may also discuss other options (for example, in cases of severe hyperhidrosis).
