Sweaty feet: what to do? Causes, tips and solutions

What to do about sweaty feet?
To get rid of sweaty feet (hyperhidrosis) for good, you need to stop masking the smell and tackle the cause. Follow these steps

  1. Inhibit sweat production:Use an anti-perspirant foot spray containing aluminium salts (such asPediSpray®) to soothe overactive sweat glands. This stops sweating right at the source.

  2. Disinfect your shoes:Sprinkle daily an antibacterial shoe powder (such asPediFris® Classic) in your shoes. This kills residual bacteria and fungi that cause the pungent sweat odour.

ℹ️Wear breathable materials:Always choose cotton or wool socks and avoid synthetic shoes that retain moisture.

What to do about sweaty feet?

You know the uncomfortable feeling all too well: clammy socks, feet sliding in your shoes and the constant fear that someone will smell your sweaty feet as soon as you take off your shoes. You've probably tried countless deodorants and remedies, but the clamminess and unpleasant smell keep returning.

Many people mistakenly think that sweat naturally stinks. This is a fable! Fresh sweat is virtually odourless. The real problem with sweaty feet is constant, excessive moisture production combined with bacteria.

Because your feet are locked in warm shoes all day, you unconsciously create the ultimate, moist lazy land for these bacteria.

Only when they start breaking down your sweat does that pungent stench arise. So the solution is surprisingly simple: stop excessive sweat production!

The solution for dry, fresh feet and shoes

Want to get rid of your sweaty feet for good? Then just washing your feet extra or using a deospray really isn't enough.

You shouldtackle the problem at its absolute sourcewith our proven two-step approach: stop the sweat production of your feet withPediSpray®and kill the bacteria and fungi withPediFris® Classic.

Go for drier feet and tackle the source

A proven approach for long-lasting results

Step 1. PediSpray® Foot Spray: Dry Feet, Less Sweat

When looking for what to do about sweaty feet, the solution always starts with soothing your sweat glands. Where a standard deodorant merely sprays a (temporary) layer of perfume over clammy feet, isPediSpray®a powerful, clinically provenantiperspirantwhich reduces sweat production itself.

The high-quality aluminium salts in the spray safely calm overactive sweat glands. This dramatically reduces excessive sweating and keeps your feet wonderfully dry for up to 5 days. And best of all? Without sweat, bacteria have nothing left to break down. So no sweat also directly means no smell!

  • Application:Spray PediSpray® at night before going to bed on clean, dried feet (don't forget the areas between your toes). Use 4 to 6 pumps and allow skin to air dry completely.

  • Operation:After one application, your feet are guaranteed to stay dry and clammy. Use it daily for the first week and then easily build up to once or twice a week as maintenance.

WithPediFris® Classicshoe powder will definitively eliminate the source of odour in your footwear. This powerful spreading powder does not cover up anything with perfume, but actively kills off bacteria and fungus.

  • Simple to use:Simply sprinkle half a teaspoon of powder into your shoes before putting them on. The powder does its job for the rest of the day, cleaning the shoe from the inside out and allowing you to take your shoes off worry-free.

Frequently asked questions about sweaty feet

Answers to frequently asked questions about causes, what helps, complications (foot fungus, chalk nail), pitted soles, deodorant versus antiperspirant, odour in shoes, infectiousness and when to seek medical advice - with links to related topics.

What are sweaty feet and how do they occur?

Sweaty feet means that the soles of your feet (and sometimes the instep) produce more sweat than is necessary for cooling. There are a great many sweat glands on the soles of the feet — often cited as 250,000+ glands per foot.

Common factors: heredity, stress, heat, exercise, tight or non-breathable shoes, and synthetic socks. Fresh sweat has hardly any smell; an unpleasant odour mainly develops when moisture remains in socks and shoes for a long time and bacteria and fungi break down the sweat. You can read more about smelly feet, foot odour and smelly shoes on our separate pages.

What helps against sweaty feet?

Address it in two ways, just as with unpleasant shoe odour:

  • On the skin: an antiperspirant for the feet (such as PediSpray®) helps to calm overactive sweat glands, so that less moisture reaches the skin.
  • In the footwear: PediFris® Classic targets bacteria and fungi in the shoe — this is where a lot of odour develops if the inside remains damp.

In addition: wash your feet daily, dry them thoroughly (between the toes), wear breathable socks (cotton, wool, bamboo), allow shoes to air for 24 hours and, where possible , alternate between two pairs. This also reduces the risk of athlete’s foot.

What complications come with prolonged wet feet (such as chalky nail and foot fungus)?

If your feet and shoes remain wet and warm for long periods, fungi and bacteria have a better chance of thriving:

  • Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis): itching, flaking, sometimes cracks between the toes — often made worse by moisture.
  • Nail fungus (onychomycosis): thickened, yellowed or brittle nails — may occur alongside athlete’s foot due to the same damp environment.

Manage sweating and hygiene (less moisture on the skin + clean, dry shoes) to prevent these problems or to support treatment alongside any antifungal medication.

What are pitted soles and what does it have to do with sweaty feet?

Pitted soles (pitted keratolysis / keratoma sulcatum) are small pits in the skin of the sole of the foot, often near the heel or ball, sometimes with a sour or pungent odour. It is caused by bacteria that break down the skin in damp conditions.

Prolonged sweating and shoes that do not dry out are among the risk factors. Approach: keep feet dry, allow shoes to air, limit synthetic materials and — as with sweaty feet — regulate perspiration on the skin and keep footwear hygienic.

What is the difference between foot deodorant and antiperspirant?

A foot deodorant mainly masks odour with perfume; the amount of sweat and moisture in your shoe remains largely the same.

An antiperspirant (including on the feet) is designed to temporarily reduce sweat production, making the surface less clammy. For wet feet, this approach to the skin is often the most important step alongside good hygiene and dry shoes.

Do baking soda, vinegar or other home remedies help against sweaty feet?

Baking soda or vinegar are sometimes used to mask odours or degrease surfaces; this may provide short-term relief. They do not structurally inhibit sweat production by your sweat glands and are no substitute for a regular routine involving suitable foot care products and shoe hygiene.

For noticeable improvement throughout the day, antiperspirant on the feet plus footwear hygiene are generally more reliable than home remedies alone.

Why do my shoes smell of ammonia or "cat piss"?

Certain strains of bacteria in a damp, poorly ventilated shoe can break down sweat into substances that smell like ammonia — often described as a “cat urine smell”. That odour can permeate the lining.

Reducing moisture (less sweat on the skin + allowing shoes to dry thoroughly) and using products designed to tackle bacteria in footwear (such as PediFris® Classic) help to combat this type of odour. See also tips for dealing with smelly shoes.

Are sweaty feet contagious?

Excessive sweating in itself is not a contagious condition: it is a function of your sweat glands and factors such as heat and stress.

Please note: a permanently damp environment inside the shoe increases the risk of fungal infections (such as athlete’s foot), and these can be contagious via wet floors or shared changing rooms. Proper drying and hygiene reduce that risk.

When should I see a GP with sweaty feet?

Please visit us if you experience pain, open wounds, signs of infection, or if you have diabetes and are concerned about your feet. Also, if you suffer from extreme excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) that hinders you on a daily basis: other treatments can then be discussed.
